Expert Analysis

Usually one of Europe’s premier sprints, but a rung or 2 below the Jubilee won by Lazzat from Satono Reve at Royal Ascot this year, and the impression is that the result could have had a rather different look to it on another day, credit to the smart and game winner notwithstanding. It was run at an overly-strong pace and resulted in the slowest relative finish of the meeting (96.8% for the winner) and the third-slowest actual finish (24.50s), the latter also a reflection of heavily-watered ground that was more like borderline “good to soft” and “good” than the official “good to firm”. The runners initially split into 3 groups, those drawn 1 to 6 close to the stand side, 13 to 15 (including the winner) centre to far side and the rest in between, but they ended up all centre to near side with draw/track position probably unimportant.

NO HALF MEASURES (113 here, 107 previously) is nothing if not game and took her already very useful form to an even higher level with this prestigious victory. Quickly away but then steadied mid to rear overall, she made headway 2f out, drifted right but soon challenged and got in front with 110 yards to go, at least as good at this trip as 5f these days. Things dropped nicely for her in the end but she needed to be smart to prevail and is likely to go well again next time.

BIG MOJO (115+ here, 107 previously) comes out marginally best on sectionals, having made his move in a strongly-run race a bit before the one who beat him, quickly away and briefly leading in the centre before tracking, coming through to edge it 1f out but headed and one paced 110 yards later. He is the most likely of these to win at a high level next time, at this trip or back at 5f.

RUN TO FREEDOM (109 here, 103 previously) ran his best race since 2nd in this 2 years before, in touch on the far side, improving in the penultimate 1f but one paced near the end. He won at 7f earlier in his career and could be worth another try at the trip.

BELIEVING (106+ here, 112 previously) ran respectably without things going perfectly for her and is probably in good heart, towards the rear in the centre and twice short of room as she improved, never quite on terms.

NOTABLE SPEECH (108+ here, 113 previously) disappointed but probably not on account of the shorter trip, making his move prematurely in a strongly-run race then seeming less than hearty bigger issues. He raced in 2nd on the stand side and overall from halfway, challenging over 1f out then hanging left and finding little. He is now rated on this season’s best form.

JASOUR (107 here and previously) ran creditably, possibly not helping his jockey early but making some late gains, never a threat.

SPY CHIEF (107 here, 104 previously) ran creditably, showing plenty of speed before losing his prominent position after 2f out then keeping on late.

SYMBOL OF HONOUR (106 here, 112 previously) had something to find and was mid-field most of the way, improving only briefly in the penultimate 1f.

ROGUE LIGHTNING (101 here, 108 previously)

IDES OF MARCH (100 here, 106 previously)

NIGHT RAIDER (98+ here, 110 previously) went far too fast in the lead and lasted long enough to suggest he is still in form.

WHISTLEJACKET (94 here, 110 previously) was slowly away and always behind, finding little when asked.

TWILIGHT CALLS (78 here, 88 previously)

FLORA OF BERMUDA (74 here, 112 previously) is probably best forgiven this, though her occasional slow starts (as here) make her difficult to rely on, losing several lengths and eased after getting back in touch mid-race.
