Expert Analysis
This was a muddling affair, run at a slow pace for a long way and resulting in a sprint finish, Delacroix running the last 2f in a swift 22.53s (115.9% finishing speed) and the second very similar. The form of the first 2 can be rated very useful, if perhaps not better than that, but the winner has other solid form that puts him higher. The ground was much as described judged on times/sectionals: that is, predominantly “good”, but with some “good to firm” at longer distances.
DELACROIX (112+ here, 117 previously) will probably be helped if the Derby is a relative test of speed, for he showed that in abundance here and may be no better at 12f than he has shown himself to be so far at this trip. He settled in 2nd before quickening to lead just over 2f out, briefly looking to have a fight on his hands but quickening really well for pressure approaching the final 1f (10.89s followed by 11.64s splits) and kept up to his work. One other thing that could count against him on Derby Day is that he was worked up beforehand, unshipping his jockey going to post, though he was thoroughly professional in the race itself.
PURVIEW (107+ here, 79+ previously) shaped well on what was just his second start, undone by a combination of greenness and coming from further back than the winner, and should be up to winning at this level. He was held up in 4th with the pace slow, improved takingly approaching 2f out and briefly got in something of a challenge, outpaced by the winner before running on well. There are similar stamina notes with him as with Delacroix.
TENNESSEE STUD (99 here, 106 previously) was outpaced when it mattered, always around the same place and running respectably.
ROCK OF CASHEL (98 here and previously) continues to be highly tried, getting the run of things up front here and seeming to run creditably without entirely convincing with his stamina.
